AI Click Recovery
Google is reading your page aloud and keeping the click. Here is how to measure the Answer-to-Click ratio in GSC and rewrite pages to recover blue-link click share.
The shape of the problem
The most-read pages in 2026 are being read by Google's AI Overview, not by humans. A page can ride the top of the SERP at position 1, log 10,000 impressions in a month, and earn 80 clicks. The model quoted the page. The user got the answer. The blue link sat there.
The Answer-to-Click ratio is the diagnostic: AI-attributed impressions divided by blue-link clicks. A ratio above 100 means you are running an unpaid summarization service for Google. The rewrite playbook is the cure.
Measure
Pull AI Overview impression share per URL from GSC. Compute Answer-to-Click for each.
Triage
Sort URLs by AI share × impressions. Pages above 5,000 monthly AI impressions go first.
Rewrite
Quotable line up top. Interactive tool, worksheet, or calculator below. Click pays off.
The rewrite pattern that works
- Open the page with the single quotable sentence the AI Overview will read aloud. Let it have the quote.
- Follow with three lines of nuance the AI will compress out. Establish trust without bloating the answer.
- Drop an interactive payload immediately: a calculator, a worksheet download, an interactive table, or a 3-question intent quiz.
- Close with one workflow checklist the AI cannot reproduce — something a user will scroll to and bookmark.
- Add an internal link to a deeper playbook (your strike distance, your CTR playbook) — gives returning users a second click.
